Your survival depends on your reading and following these lists:
What You Must Bring:
* Your ticket or Photo ID and confirmation number for “will call” $295.00
* 1.5 gallons of water per person per day (for drinking, showering, washing, and food preparation). Carry a bottle of water with you at all times. 2.5 gal. jugs: $3.50
* Enough food/beverages for your entire party (seperate list?)
* First-aid kit $24.95
* Warm clothing for evenings - this is a desert at 4000 feet elevation! (have this already covered)
* Bedding and shelter of some type - the winds can exceed 75 mph, and the mid-day temperature can exceed 100°
* A good camp tent $200.00 is recommended along with warm sleeping bags $100.00. Evening temperatures can be in the 40’s. (Air Mattress: $50.00)
* Garbage bags (see grocery list)
* Any required prescriptions, contact lens supplies (disposables work great), or whatever else you need to maintain your health and comfort in a remote area with no services
* Flashlights $30.00 and spare batteries ($20.00) (headlamps are useful $10.00) to be sure you can see and be seen at night
* Sunscreen/sunblock lotion and sunglasses Goggles:($30.00-50.00)
* Fire extinguishers 15.00, to protect your camp and property and if you plan to burn your art
* Common sense, an open mind, and a positive attitude
We Strongly Suggest You Bring:
Bike rack for back of car: $65-100.00
* Shade structures, umbrellas, parasols, sheets; something to break the cruel mid-day sun
Supplies/time investment to build home made structure (monkey hut looks good so far)
buy 10x20’ carport (100-150)
* A wide brim hat (a chinstrap is useful in the wind) ($30.00)
* A cooking stove if you expect to heat food or liquid. (Century Trail Scout Stove $20.00)
* A bicycle (mountain bike or cruisers with balloon tires are best) which must be equipped with a light (for safe nighttime travel); a lock is strongly recommended. Tag your bike with your name, playa address, email address, and other contact info.
* Tire repair kit, spare parts and extra tubes for bikes (they make great playa gifts)
* Portable shower Seattle Sports Camp Shower - 5 Gallon 25.00 with a drain system ?? (wood trough, maybe...) to collect grey water
* Earplugs! ($10-15 for enough to lose a few) (Not everyone is going to want to sleep when you do)
* Watertight protective bags (http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=69841&PRODID=63297&_DARGS=/experthelp/f_Product.jhtml.1_A&_DAV=image6)(e.g. heavy zip-type) for cameras or electronic gear
* Lotion / lip balm to treat cracked skin ($15.00)
* Smokers: portable ashtrays (e.g. mint tin that doesn’t leak ashes, or film canister) (2-3 cartons of American Spirits: $100)
* Costumes, musical instruments, props, banners, signs, and anything else you can think of that might make the experience more fun for you and your playa neighbors. (found clothing on street experiment ??)
* An AM/FM radio (crank radio with flashlight thingee: $20-30)
* Camp marker (flag, flasher, distinctive marking) (Big ass skull and Crossbones Flag: $30.00)
* Particle/dust mask (dust storms are common) ($5.00/50 or so online...) Also maybe, Bandanas
* 12" tent stakes (high winds are likely, rebar is cheap and effective) (20.00 for all stakes...)
* Plastic bottles or tennis balls to top and protect dangerous rebar stakes. (free)
* Goggles to protect eyes in case of dust storms. see above
* Extra set of car keys (keys are easily lost and there is no locksmith in Black Rock City!) (free)
Helpful Things to Bring:
* Sewing kit (10.00)
* Rope and/or string
* Ribbons, Mylar, etc., to flag tent ropes/guy lines (
* Handy wipes
* Duct tape (gaff tape- free, hopefully...)
* Spray bottle (for misting) (several!! 15-20) mix with essential oils, teatree, lavendar, etc
* Rugs to keep dust down in your camp (Remember to remove stray fibers when removing MOOP - Matter Out of Place - before departure.)
* Gifts to give to new friends
* Calling card just in case you have to make a personal call from Gerlach
